Eye twitching, or myokymia, is an involuntary spasm
of the eye muscles. In some cultures, these muscle spasms are believed to
represent good or bad fortune. For example, in Indian culture some believe that
if your right eye is twitching you will receive positive news. This could be in
the form of a financial gain or successful achievement. Regardless of what
superstition surrounds it, the good news is that typically eye twitching is no
big deal. Some common causes of eye twitching are lack of sleep, stress, poor
vision, allergies, inflammation, and injuries. While eye
twitching usually goes away on its own there are some things that you can try
if it persists such as reducing eye strain, getting some rest, and keeping your
eyes well lubricated. So, how do you know when your eye twitching is due to
something more serious? Contact your eye care physician. We recommend doing so
if you also notice other symptoms or if the twitching persists for more than a
couple days.
